History - Tibetan Scientific Society

Tibetan Scientific Society was started by a group of Tibetan science students pursuing graduate studies back in 2008. It is a non-profit organization that was created to address the need for a platform where Tibetans pursuing and aspiring to pursue scientific career could interact, network, and learn from one another, and contribute to our community. The founders were particularly inspired by His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s call for the need for Tibetans to pursue and excel in various specialized scientific fields (Rigchik Kangzin).

One of the notable projects the society has carried out since its inception is what are called the Tibetan Science Conclaves. These conclaves are biennial events that bring together Tibetan science students, researchers and professionals from all over India to not only network and learn from each other but also get inspired by scientists, engineers, educators and philosophers we invite to each one of these events to share their wisdom and experiences. The first conclave (TSC-I) was held at the Tibetan Youth Hostel (TYH), Delhi from 11th to 14th of December, 2010. The second, third and fourth conclaves were all held at TYH, Bangalore in 2012, 2014 and 2016 respectively. The fifth conclave was held in Delhi in 2018. The 2020 conclave was substituted by a series of webinars due to COVID restrictions.

Besides the Tibetan Science Conclaves, the society has helped coordinate various science and Buddhism workshops, organized science-focused programs in Tibetan schools to inspire young school-going Tibetan kids and organized science essay contests for Tibetan schools.

Tibetan Scientific Society (TS2) is a non-profitable organization whose mission is to help Tibetan students succeed in STEM and foster scientific temper in our society.
